With so many churches today failing within 3-5 years of opening their doors, it has become evident that Pastors and Elders alike, are desperate for a means to get more people in the door and keep them in the building than ever before. So much so, once solid leaders of faith are willing to succumb to gimmicks such as light shows, fog filled worship concerts, and non-offensive teaching in order to emulate the Lukewarm emergent church rockstars of today and forsake the Gospel in it’s entirety because, in its absoluteness, the bible is offensive to non-believers. An offensive message just isn’t good church growth theory.
More and more, prominent church leaders today are content with offering up watered down, zero-calorie, “lite” gospel in the name of being “seeker-sensitive” and “culturally relevant.” This is quite frightening.
As 2 Timothy 4:3 states,
“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires,”
We are seeing this prophecy unfold and many watch helplessly as the poisonous prosperity gospel continues to spread like a vehement plague devouring every Gerber Good Start Christian in it’s path. Left in it’s wake is a seemingly endless line of Matthew 13 Christians; seeds thrown amongst Rocky soil and thorns that will eventually go out from among us since they were never actually of us.
What will it take for the once doctrinally sound teachers of God’s word to make a U-turn on the Seeker Sensitive highway and head back toward the absolute truth on-ramp?
I am no expert on these matters and therefore won’t even begin to pretend that I know the answer, but I do know this current track we’re on as a body of believers, has very few places to make U-turns. I fear that, for some, they’re no longer in the driver seat. Instead, they’ve bought they’re train ticket and the only way to get off will be to tuck and roll, abandoning the mile-wide-inch-deep ministry they started and simply watch the locomotive of false doctrine continue full steam ahead until it either derails or is picked up by another equally persuasive, smooth talking, charismatic rockstar, behind which, satan is the real power.
I pray that someone with much more influence than myself will boldly take a stand and proclaim
2 Timothy 4:2
preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.
This is NOT the time to back down. This is NOT the part where we politely ask.
We are NOT here to proliferate easy-to-swallow church growth theory.
This is the point where we lovingly step on, mash, and even break some toes as we win souls to Christ and live out HIS example of love.
