Depends on how big your bible is, right?
It is because of science and scientific discoveries along with paleontologists and their successful endeavors, that we have a plethora of information available to us today that would otherwise still be shrouded in mystery and magical falsehoods like that of the Roman’s and the greek’s mythological beliefs.
Thanks to science, we know that the earth is 25 thousand miles in circumference. It weighs six septillion, five-hundred and eighty-six, six trillion tons, hangs in empty space, and spins at a thousand miles an hour with perfect balance which is most important so that you’re not jumping every time the earth moves. At the same time that it’s spinning at a thousand miles an hour, it is moving through space around the sun at a thousand miles a minute in an orbit of 580 million miles and does so at a perfect angle set to create the seasons which provide all the crops, which provide every living creature with nourishment.
There are, however, many questions that science simply cannot figure out, moreover, because they are unwilling to figure it out since understanding would mean denouncing everything they have ever stood for and spent a great deal of their lives insisting simply cannot be true.
Where science lacks understanding though, God and His historical creation account in Genesis do not. We know God created everything….E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G. He SPOKE everything into existence.
- Day 1– God created light and separated the light from the darkness, calling light “day” and darkness “night.”
- Day 2– God created an expanse to separate the waters and called it “sky.”
- Day 3– God created the dry ground and gathered the waters, calling the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters “seas.” On day three, God also created vegetation (plants and trees).
- Day 4 – God created the sun, moon, and the stars to give light to the earth and to govern and separate the day and the night. These would also serve as signs to mark seasons, days, and years.
- Day 5– God created every living creature of the seas and every winged bird, blessing them to multiply and fill the waters and the sky with life.
- Day 6 – God created the animals to fill the earth. On day six, God also created man and woman (Adam and Eve) in his own image to commune with him. He blessed them and gave them every creature and the whole earth to rule over, care for, and cultivate.
- Day 7 – God had finished his work of creation and so he rested on the seventh day, blessing it and making it holy.
Are dinosaurs in the bible?
Notice in day 6, every living creature on the earth was created including humans? That means, all animals and Adam and Eve inhabited the earth at the same time. There was not a million year spans between the time God created land animals and when He picked up some dirt and made someone beautiful out of dust. God did not create a bunch of fetuses and then allow them to mature. Everything, like Adam, like the stars, and the planets, were all created in full maturity. We have to conclude then, if when the bible says on day 6, every land creature was created along with humans, that the author of Genesis is including reptiles.
Some interesting facts about reptiles:
- There are approximately 8,000 species of known reptiles alive today.
- Reptiles are cold-blooded. (ectothermic)
- While Living, Reptiles never stop growing.
Keeping in mind, the framework of the world as it was set up before the great flood, earth’s habitat and ecosystem had to be much different than it is today considering there had never been rain and yet all life had to be maintained. There were no vast oceans like we have today. When God flooded the earth, He tells us where the water came from in Genesis chapters 7 and 8.
In Genesis 6 to 9, we find the whole story including where God drowned the world. There was no meteor that brought on a great extinction, and although there might be some indication today that there were some tremendous explosions on the face of the earth (not millions of years ago), we know for sure that IS what happened when God broke the face of the earth up and shot forth explosive gas along with the water in the caverns of the deep. They flew into space and broke up the canopy and caused it to rain for 40 days and 40 nights.
So before the flood, the surface of the earth had to be much different than it is now. There were no deep ocean basins nor were there any high mountains where moisture would collect, freeze and then thaw. The earth was a much more level surface and water didn’t come down from the sky… there was a canopy that filtered out the ultraviolet rays of the sun. That’s why people lived to be 900 years+. Adam lived to be 930 and Methuselah made it to the age of 969. That’s also why animals lived so long. Here’s the point…
reptiles grow exponentially…add in the factor of hundreds of years and you inevitably end up with some really big lizards; we call them dinosaurs. Dinosaurs were just big lizards who kept growing for centuries. We know dinosaurs once roamed the earth because paleontologists continue to find their fossils scattered all throughout the earth today, buried under the rock layers. Lizards simply cannot develop in this manner anymore because they can’t live long enough in this altered post-flood climate.
In the last 5 years, I have personally seen a theory gaining momentum among Christians: “Dinosaurs never existed.”
Three Common Dino Misconceptions:
- God created evolution and let it run wild and Dino’s evolved along with everything else. (Theistic evolution)
- God First Created Dinosaurs Millions of Years Before He Created humans.
- Dinosaurs Are Never Mentioned In The Bible.
Well, we just briefly went over the 6 days of creation, so no need to recap and the same goes for the second misconception because we learned on day 6, God created man and animals all on that day…not millions of years apart.
So, the last one is, are Dino’s ever mentioned in the bible? Anyone that has ever sought out an answer to this question before has undoubtedly stumbled upon Leviathan and behemoth; two massive creatures mentioned in the pages of Job (chpt. 40-41) Most Scholars believe the book of Job to be the oldest book of the bible (1500 B.C.), other than Genesis of course. No one knows the exact date it was penned, but we can narrow it down based on the clues throughout the chapters. 12:15 for instance, Job is speaking of God’s power and he says,
“If he withholds the waters, they dry up; if he sends them out, they overwhelm the land.” This leads us to believe he was familiar with the Noahic flood. The very end of the book, the author tells us Job was about 200 years old when he died… 42:16
“And after this Job lived 140 years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, four generations.”
Factor in that there is no mention of the Abrahamic covenant, Israel, the Exodus or the law of Moses, and Job’s wealth was measured in livestock rather than gold and silver (1:3, 42:12), and we arrive at the probability that the events laid out in Job occurred sometime after Babel (gen. 11:1-9) but, before or coextensively, with Abraham (gen. 11:27).
Therefore, given the timeline and the fact that the descriptions of these beasts in job don’t really fit any creatures that we know of today and cannot be found in any history books, it would not be that far of a stretch to conclude these creatures that are described, were in fact dinosaurs of some sort. There are all kinds of fossilized bones that have been discovered since the 1800’s, that most certainly don’t belong to any living creatures today, but their petrified remains declare the validity of their past existence.
Descriptions of both: (possible Leviathan fossil?)
Leviathan- Heb. livyathan “dragon, serpent, huge sea animal,” of unknown origin, perhaps related to liwyah “wreath,” from root l-w-h- “to wind, turn, twist.” Rahab is the word used in Job 7:12 which refers to massive sea-going animals.
- Has Terrifying teeth
- Scales like rows of shields, closely fastened together and hard as stone. (41:15)
- Resident of the sea. (psalm 104:26)
- Knowing no fear.
- The mere sight of him is overpowering (job 41:9)
- Immune to all man’s weapons.
- Could not be pulled in with a fishhook or have his tongue tied down with a rope. (job 41:1)
- His snorting throws out flashes of light
- His eyes are like the rays of dawn
- His breath sets coals ablaze
- flames dart from his mouth
Many scholars attempt to identify this animal as a crocodile, but as other experts have pointed out, there are several problems with this idea. Although some crocs do venture into the coastal areas and can swim out to sea, the deep ocean is not their normal habitat. They are found mainly in inland waters, where they live in lakes, rivers, swamps and estuaries, and breed on the shores. Therefore they would not be described as great beasts of the sea (Psalm 104:25–26). Nor are crocodiles so terrifying that no one dares tackle them—crocodiles are regularly trapped and killed by native tribes with simple technology. Nor do they breathe fire. If anything, this description in Job leads us to believe that Leviathan was a fire breathing, reptilian, sea monster. Dare I say, Dinosaur?
Behemoth- Heb. b’hemoth – Other uses included Hippoptomus and Elephant (neither of which fit the Job 40:15-24 description)
- Feeds on grass like an ox
- Extremely Strong and Powerful
- His tail sways like a cedar
- Most Likely a herbivore ( 40:20 “The hills bring him their produce, and all the wild animals play nearby”)
- He’s the largest animal God created (vs. 19)
- Rested among the reeds in the marsh
In the end, are these descriptions clear enough to say that these were dinosaurs? Better yet, are they not? We have no records or any other findings to date of any other sorts of creatures that fit the details of these accounts. We know that they were real because the bible is a history book, not plagued by legends or myths.
Using logic and reason, we can only conlcude that Leviathan and Behemoth were two massive, extremely strong, rough, tough, bad creatures that God created along with man (v. 15a Look at the behemoth, which I made along with you).
The longevity of pre-flood life (the average span was some 13 or 14 times longer than our average life span today) and the fact that man lived longer, its only logical that animals also lived longer. If a reptile were allowed to live 13 or 14 times longer than it does today, in addition to their unending growth, the results would be a pretty good sized lizard. Take the four-foot iguana who lives on the Galapagos Islands today, increase his life span some 13 or 14 times and the result would be a very large reptile. Or the twelve-foot Komodo Dragon, living in Sumatra today- increase his life span 13 to 14 times- allowing him to grow the entire length of time, and he too would be an extremely large reptile.
Dinosaurs were nothing more than big lizards, but they did exist, God created them. I’ll tell you what though, I hope it was baby Dino’s that got on the Ark, for Noah’s sake.
Alas, all of this means nothing to anyone lacking “the fear of the Lord” because this “is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (Prov. 9:10). And “in [Christ] are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Col. 2:3).
All is meaningless to the natural man, every doctrine of the bible, if you don’t first have Christ. This is why even the most brilliant evolutionists and scientists with all the scientific tools of the world at their disposal, cannot see the Creator behind it all, because they have not surrendered all to Him.
Even Albert Einstein said, “Of course there is a massive intelligence behind the universe, a man is a fool who doesn’t believe that.” And then went on to say, “But we could never know Him.” The humanistic evolutionist refuses to see what is obvious, refuses to meet the God who wants to be known. All of the best scientific and well thought out debates in the world could never win these men and women for Christ; no one has ever been argued into salvation. Only a fully surrendered life of love could do that. So walk in a manner that is worthy. (ephesians 4:1)
